Turkey vs the Far East: Where to Produce Your Clothing Line

Brands sourcing in Europe usually end up comparing Turkey against Far East options such as China, Bangladesh or Vietnam at some point. Both regions have real strengths, and the right answer depends on the brand's volume, speed requirements and product type rather than on one region being universally better.

This comparison looks at the factors that actually change a buying decision: freight and lead time, sampling speed, minimum order size, communication, compliance visibility and fabric sourcing.

Lead time and freight to Europe

Turkey's geography puts it closer to European ports and road networks than any Far East manufacturing hub, which generally shortens shipping time and gives brands more routing options, including road freight for urgent orders.

Far East shipments to Europe typically rely on sea freight over a longer distance, which can still be cost-effective for large, planned orders but leaves less room for late reordering or in-season top-ups.

Sampling speed and time zones

Sample rounds involve back-and-forth communication: a sample is sent, comments come back, a revised sample is made. The shorter the distance and the closer the working hours, the faster this cycle tends to move in practice.

Turkey sits in a time zone close to most of Europe, which makes same-day email exchanges and video calls straightforward. Far East suppliers usually have a working-day overlap of only a few hours with European offices, which can add a day to each round of back-and-forth simply from the time difference.

Minimum order size and compliance visibility

Minimum order quantities exist in both regions, driven by the same fabric and line-setup constraints described elsewhere. Neither region has a universal advantage here, since the minimum depends more on the specific factory and fabric than on geography.

Compliance visibility can differ: European buyers increasingly want direct access to a factory's audit history and certifications, such as SEDEX/SMETA or GOTS. Being based within reach of Europe tends to make in-person audits and factory visits easier to schedule.

Where the Far East genuinely makes sense

For very high-volume orders, particularly in synthetic fabrics, the Far East's scale and deep local supply chains for polyester and other man-made fibres can be a real advantage, since those fibres are often produced and finished in the same region.

Brands running large, long-lead-time programmes with limited need for in-season reordering may find that the lower per-unit cost achievable at very high volumes outweighs the extra shipping time. The right choice depends on the brand's volume and planning horizon, not on a blanket preference for one region.

Working with ANT Textile

ANT Textile is based in Istanbul, around 30 minutes from Istanbul Airport, with wholly owned factories in Yenibosna and a new facility in Edirne/Keşan in planning, which keeps sampling, communication and factory visits within easy reach of European buyers.
